Understanding the Energy Sector

Research & Analysis · Equities · Energy · July 2026

The energy sector has been one of the market's standout performers in 2026. The sector ETF (XLE) is up roughly 32 to 34% year to date, compared to about 9% for the S&P 500, a gap largely driven by the U.S.-Iran conflict and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. Beneath these geopolitical headlines, however, three structural shifts are reshaping how the sector is being analyzed. First, AI driven data center growth could nearly triple U.S. power demand by 2030, ending 15 years of flat electricity consumption and pulling investment into gas fired generation, nuclear, and grid infrastructure. Second, the global LNG market is entering its largest build out in history, with liquefaction capacity additions peaking around 2028 and U.S. export capacity expanding significantly by 2030. Third, global energy investment is projected to reach $3.4 trillion in 2026, with capital flowing into clean energy at nearly twice the pace of fossil fuels, even as record U.S. crude and natural gas production continue to anchor domestic supply. At the same time, near term oil markets are expected to stay range bound. Global demand is set to contract slightly in 2026 before supply is projected to swing into surplus in 2027. The full report walks through how these dynamics play out differently across the energy value chain, covering upstream production, midstream and LNG infrastructure, downstream refining, and power and grid. It also includes detailed valuation comparisons, risk factors, and scenario modeling.
